i've been waiting for quite some time to line up next to my classmate's new M3, his dads a doc and bought it for him a few months ago, silver and a dam fine machine. he's a nice guy and will make a really good doc one day, but since then the clout has been hitting me in the face, and i would go to sleep at nite wondering if my lowly stage III TTZ could really take a 4.8 sec 0-60 car. well today im heading to the hospital on 183E (for u dallasites) in the slow lane minding my own business, moderate traffic, 87 degrees, a/c off, windows partially down. and lo and freakin behold, he flies by me in the middle lane, almost rear ending some poor innocent motorist, i dont think he saw me cuz he was changing lanes and tailgating foolishly, like i said traffic was moderate so i just sat back and watched him unsuccessfully try to basically shove his way through traffic. it was then that i noticed an opening coming up maybe a mile away in the middle lane, so i got behind him, turned the stereo down, rolled the windows up and waited. he changed lanes pointlessly a few more times before seeing the opening himself, and sliding in front of me in the middle lane. and this was when my heart came up in my throat, little beads of sweat forming on my forehead, my grip on the steering wheel tightening, my hand on the shifter getting ready for the assault, my feet twitching, getting ready to make some lightning shifts. after all, this was THE NEW M3, 333 hp, 1/4 in low 13's, raved upon by every freakin car magazine, drooled over by every teenager and sought after by every car enthusiast, at $45G's a dam good buy too, and me with my 12 psi of boost thanks to some cheap welding tips, wishing i had a boost controller. dam why couldnt it have been 67 degrees?!? and as i finished my quick prayer, it began. there was one car in the middle lane with us lined up behind it, cars on the left and the right. the middle car inched forward, not knowing that the shit was about to go down. were all doing about 60 at this point. the car inches forward some more, any time now... i drop into 3rd, the revs climb to 4K or so, the sound of the engine dominates the cabin, drowning out my heartbeat and rapid breathing. perfect, i think, right around the torque peak. i know ill have to shift into 4th soon since redline is not far away. and then the opening presents....i see the small puff of black smoke from the quad tips and the squat of the M3 heralding the fact that the owner has floored it. he moves into the left lane as i take the right. bam! i gradually lean into the throttle into that sweet spot where the revs climb and the boost kicks. my head gets pulled back and my back sinks into the seat, he passed the car in the middle before i did, boom! 6.5K rpm, shift! bam! back on the throttle. boost gauge shoots to 12 psi again. as i catch my breath i look in the side view and i have three freakin car lengths on him!!! i slide into the left lane and apply more throttle, i see him shrinking!! my speed at this point is between 120 and 130 mph, didnt look at the speedo for long. i had covered so much ground that we were back in traffic again, and i dropped it into neutral and coasted to 70 mph. i see him gaining on me fast and see him blow by me on the right gm style. but as he passed me i saw him look over and the look on his face was one of shock! priceless! we stop at the light on the exit to our school, i ask him to roll down the window, hesitant at first then he obliges. i raise my hand and make a gun and shoot it then blow on the tip. his words: "that was you!?!" me: man i killed u. him: nah man, i raced this 540 last nite and we almost got killed so no more racing for me. me: u mean u werent stepping on it? him: oh no...not at all... me: c'mon...i saw u take off. him: no way, i dont wanna get killed. me: ok... him: so what have u done to that thing? me: just chip, intake and exhaust. him: so how much horsepower is that? me: about 400. him: (no response) then the light turned green and we went our ways....i was really psyched, best race i had since i took that modded rx7 on the freeway a few months ago. definitely a kill IMHO. that black smoke wasnt a malfunction. i admit the car does haul on the freeway, but stage III TTZ'ers have nothing to worry about. from a stop the M3 would probably win...but the Z kicks ass on the freeway. kind of disappointed since he wouldnt cop to it, but definitely a good way to start the evening.
